PENDANT LIGHTING FROM
THE ATZOMPA COLLECTION
FTER SERVING AS THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR
Travel + Leisure Magazine for several years, Laura
Aviva launched her own business, L'Aviva Home,
to further her passion for discovering new cultures
and places. Based in New York City, Aviva creates lighting fixtures,
blankets and throws, rugs, fabric and wallpaper, hammocks,
poufs and pillows with skilled artisans in different continents.
Three of her newest collections were produced in collabora-
tion with craftsmen from Latin America. Created with master
artisan Eligio Zarate in Santa María Atzompa, Mexico—where
the pottery-making tradition has roots tracing back to ancient
Zapotec culture—the Atzompa collection comprises lighting
fixtures made with red clay and topped by carved wooden
rings. Inspired by the equestrian heritage of Colombia, the
Talabartero collection (which means "master saddler") was
made in collaboration with Edgar Beltran Jaramillo and his
team in Bogota. The leather poufs and pillows are crafted from
a saturated jewel-toned palette that draws on the paintings of
Fernando Botero. For the Werregue lighting collection, pieces
were woven with werregue fiber by the Wounaan, an indigenous
group from Colombia's Pacific Coast, and characterized by their
bold, graphic patterning in black and white. Every L'Aviva Home
collection tells a unique and fascinating story with reinvented
traditions. lavivahome.com
