He hired Ron Godfredsen and Danna Sigal, Architects to expand and bring a modern ambience to the house. A Wrightian influenced addition with eat-in kitchen, and a library above was added at the rear, the exteriors were perforated with skylights and light windows that seem to give a tip of the hat to James Turrell's work in Venice. Roy McMakin completed the vision with custom made furniture (some of which may be available for separate purchase). While now modern, the character of the original Craftsman style is still referenced with exterior matching lap siding, and the retention of many interior period details. The residence is set in a garden with an olive grove, grassy yard, and exotic plantings, and includes open plan public spaces, library, three bedrooms, two baths, and laundry. A real home should afford its owners a personal life- style, unique in comfort and beauty, designed with care, and attending to the needs of the individual. The cre- ation of this kind of architec- ture requires an architect whose work can stand the test of time. The names list- ed in the preceeding panels, spanning the past hundred years, are among those re- sponsible for the most nota- ble residential architecture in Southern California. Crosby Doe Associates spe- cializes in the sale of these homes and the preservation of the lifestyles they repre- sent. We invite your participation in this endeavor either as a seller, by offering you our unique marketing services and sales expertise, or as a buyer introducing you to the variety of residential archi- tecture currently available. 3 1 0 . 2 7 5 . 2 2 2 2 Crosby Doe Associates, Inc. Predecessor to John Entenza's Case Study House Program, Neutra's Douglas Fir Plywood Demonstration House was originally built for a House & Garden exhibition to showcase a modern living lifestyle. After a successful run, and much publicity, the residence was acquired by Stella Gramer, the law partner of John Entenza's father. Stella hired architect Harwell Hamilton Harris to help move the house, and site it within its present double-lot garden in Brentwood Glen. 1943 saw the sale of the property to architect Maynard Lyndon. After completing his new family residence in Malibu, Lyndon sold the property in 1950 to artist William Brice and his wife Shirley Bardeen with good blessings and funds provided by his mother Fannie Brice. William promptly hired Richard Neutra to design an art studio in the garden. The compound has served the family well through today. Although written by Maynard Lyndon's son, architect Donlyn Lyndon, describing the family's Malibu House, his thoughts seem to apply equally to the Plywood Demonstration/Brice Residence as well: "Every decision about the house was intended to emphasize the interdependence of inside and outside: to speak at once of the pleasures of the place and of the importance of giving disciplined thought to its nurture. Nature, tempered, is given precedence. Architecture, tempered, speaks softly and eloquently of human presence."
