NO. 9
Entenza House
Built on a bluff in Pacific Palisades, Case Study House No. 9 was designed by Charles Eames
and Eero Saarinen for Arts & Architecture publisher and editor John Entenza. Completed
in 1949, the house masters indoor/outdoor integration. Featuring steel frame construction
that is concealed inside by plaster and wood panel surfaces, the design flaunts enormous
flexibility, with pared-down private space to make way for generous entertaining areas. The
result is a square-shaped home with openness and flow that invites ease and conversation,
with built-in seating in a sunken living room further fostering the communal feel. Functional
areas, including a garage, kitchen, utility room and study, orbit the generous interior living
space. From the outdoor terrace is a view of Case Study House No. 8—Eames House.
